KIBERA BORN

WORKSHOP KIBERA

In January 2019 the first Picha Poa workshop took place for four weeks at the Kenya Assembly of God Educational Center in Kibera, Nairobi. In cooperation with One Fine Day and Anno’s Africa the workshop was included in the school lesson from Monday to Friday from 3:30pm to 5:30pm. Eight students participated in the photography class. Canon Germany supported the workshop with three packages of cameras (Canon EOS 7D MKII) and lenses. In these four weeks they learned the theoretical part of photography and could practice what they have learned in different exercises. Week after week the students have to be aware of more creative rules and technical aspects of shooting. In a portrait shoot they could practice where light can come from. They spent every Monday in the rooms of the other One Fine Day art classes and documented the work of the groups. With the help of One Fine Day a trip to another partner school in Mathare, the Valley View Academy, was organized. There the photography kids were also allowed to shoot during the art classes. The big highlight of the workshop was a two day street photography shoot in Kibera. The three groups were separated and guided by a local to take pictures of their home and its people.

On the last day of the workshop we organized an exhibition of a collection of all of the pictures taken during the class and presented them in the assembly hall of the school. Every student and even the parents were invited to take a look at the results. In the end the pictures were handed over to their creators, the kids of the first Picha Poa photography class at KAG School.

Back in Germany I organized the KIBERA BORN exhibition in the the „erstererster“ gallery in Prenzlauer Berg with the help of Uschi Feldges. 54 pictures were chosen to be exhibited. Each of them received an individual second-hand frame and was hung up in a salon-style hang in the gallery. The irregular hanging and the old frames should gave an impression of Kibera where the people create new things out of old stuff. The seeming chaos actually result in a colorful and vivid scenery. That was the inspiration for KIBERA BORN.

From March 28th until April 2nd  2019 the gallery was open for interested visitors, friends, family and all supporters of Picha Poa. Every picture were available for sale. In the end more than 2500€ could be generated with the sale. The earnings should be used to invest in camera equipment to start a regular photography class in Kibera in cooperation with One Fine Day and Anno’s Africa. In the future more and more students from KAG and One Fine Day clubs should get the chance to join the world of photography. We ware working on it!

All the pictures from the KIBERA BORN exhibition are still available for sale. For information about printings and prices don’t hesitate to contact us: pichapoaworkshop@gmail.com
